Are you interested in understanding the interpretation and meaning of your dreams ? Have you ever stopped to think about that recurring nightmare that keeps you from sleeping? What is your subconscious trying to tell you while you sleep, and how can we accurately interpret our nighttime thoughts?

You may not know it, but our brains remain active at night and can dream, no matter how tiring the day has been. What's more, each dream we have is completely different. Understanding the meaning of dreams and learning to interpret their complex narratives will help you get to know yourself much better.
The study of the meaning and interpretation of dreams has preoccupied and intrigued humankind since the dawn of time. While in antiquity the deciphering of dream symbols sought to find a divine message, from the 20th century onward, with the development of psychoanalysis, dream interpretation has been used to reveal unconsciously stored content in the human mind, everyday worries that cause us distress, and other related matters.
Thanks to renowned psychoanalysts such as the famous Sigmund Freud , the Frenchmen Jean Laplanche and Jean-Bertrand Pontalis, and the Swiss Carl Gustav Jung, dream interpretation has gone from being seen as something frivolous to being a recognized clinical technique. Once asleep, we embark on an adventure, reflecting our aspirations and fears. Our hours of rest become an expedition into the problems of daily life, those worries that invade our minds, and therefore understanding dream interpretation is essential to clarifying their meaning.

Official dream dictionary: interpretation will no longer be a mystery to you
In ancient times, cultures tried to figure out how to interpret each dream, some from a mystical and esoteric approach, but others followed the scientific method. That is, as in any other civilization, there were highly reputable charlatans and psychologists.
Everything that happens in our subconscious when we dream can help resolve many questions we can't answer while awake. Perhaps this is why humankind has spent centuries trying to understand the meanings of dreams, seeking to learn everything about the mind and personality.
Make a dream interpretation and find out what it means
Do we really have prophetic dreams? Why do they represent our ambitions and fears? Why does the subconscious create indecipherable thoughts? Sometimes, we can be surprised by the complexity of a dream. We dream that we lose our job, that a family member dies, or that we break up with our partner. In other words, these are dreams related to our environment , and sometimes they seem so real that we search for meaning in the dream message that our subconscious sends us. Interpretation vs meaning of dreams
Knowing the meaning of a dream is not the same as interpreting it. To correctly interpret a dream, you not only need to understand its meaning but also other important details and the context in which it occurs. The same dream meaning can have very different interpretations for different people because it will be influenced by what that meaning implies, depending on your personality, your family, your environment, your love life, your health, or even your financial situation. For example, dreaming of gold is not the same if you are rich as it is if you are poor. In the end, the dream is the same, but the interpretation is very different.
The Interpretation of Dreams in Antiquity
The Greeks were already interested in this topic. But at that time, their system for attempting to interpret dreams was based on oral tradition. That is, all those ideas that were passed down from generation to generation, and for the most part, it was the will of the gods that was seen in those dreams.
But on the other side of this belief, authors like the philosopher Plato and Aristotle also recorded their opinions on the matter in books such as Plato's *Republic* and Aristotle's *On Dreams*. It's also worth noting that, later, Pythagoras addressed this topic as a means of communication with supernatural beings. Meanwhile, the Stoics favored providence. Later still, new opinions emerged from Cicero and Artemidorus.
What is dreaming?
Trying to guess what is happening around us, and through dreams, is called oneiromancy. But only dreams, because when nightmares were involved, it was said that they were cast by the devil and were not worthy of analysis. It is true that despite all the existing theories, this divination technique is based on the studies of Sigmund Freud.
Psychoanalysis and the interpretation of Freud
Some of the ideas and studies that would come with Freud were already based on what we just mentioned. In other words, they weren't entirely new, as tradition was very much present in them. But, although it's a complex concept to analyze, it must be said that Freud arrived to mark a turning point. He wanted to show that the symbolism reflected in dreams was related to our mind and the unconscious.

For this reason, when analyzing a dream, we must consider all the concepts and ideas we see in it and not focus on just one. We also cannot add superstitious techniques or suggestive interpretations. Connections and relationships to our daily lives will also be of utmost importance. Of all dreams, Freud called those that are most frequently repeated "typical dreams." For example, those related to death or falls. Since all of these can bring to light an internal conflict . In short, he asserted that dreams are a path to our inner selves and our most hidden desires.
The analytical psychology of Carl Jung
Having studied Freud, we certainly shouldn't forget Jung. He, too, was somewhat perplexed by Freud's ideas, but the Swiss psychiatrist went a step further. Broadly speaking, for him, dreams were a product of nature. He observed delusions and hallucinations in his patients daily, and these, along with their dreams, shared commonalities with certain mythological stories.
Therefore, he realized that there wasn't always a direct relationship between what a person experienced or felt and their dreams. For this reason, he called it the collective unconscious. All of this would be a kind of behavioral symbolism that humans inherit and that can be defined as archetypes or certain biological instincts. So, in short, what Jung wanted to convey is that dreams have meaning related to our experiences and serve as a bridge to the needs of the soul.

What are the stages of sleep
Knowing each of the different phases of sleep can help us a lot to have a much more pleasant sleep and rest better. This is something that also influences a lot in what we dream, so knowing the phases well is vital.
Phase I: numbness stage
It is the first stage and encompasses the first 10 minutes of sleep , from when we are awake until we fall slightly asleep.
Phase II: light sleep stage
The second stage of sleep lasts approximately half of the total sleep time and is the stage in which your body gradually disconnects from its surroundings, while your heart rate slows and your breathing becomes calmer and more rhythmic. It's very difficult to wake up during this stage, but despite this, our brain alternates between periods of high activity and much lower activity. Normally, when we wake up from this stage, we do so with a start, for example, when we dream that we trip or fall off a cliff.
Phase III: transition stage
The third phase is the shortest of all, lasting about 2 or 3 minutes in total, and is a transition between the light sleep phase and deep sleep.
Phase IV: deep sleep stage
The deep sleep phase lasts for 20% of total sleep and is the most important of all because it determines the quality of rest and the body's ability to recover from the day's fatigue. The respiratory rate is very low and the heart pressure drops a lot so it is also very difficult for us to wake up naturally from this phase.
REM sleep phase
REM sleep accounts for 25% of our sleep. The name REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, meaning that the eyes are in constant motion beneath the eyelids . Brain activity during this stage is very high, almost at the same level as when we are awake, but at the same time, our eye muscles are locked to prevent us from reacting to all the information our brain is processing. Sleep occurs during this phase , making it the most important stage to consider on this website.
Most common dreams
Not all dreams are equally common. Some dreams are experienced by many people, such as dreaming about your ex or even dreaming about getting back together with your ex , dreaming about water , dreaming about excrement , dreaming about flying , dreaming about gunshots , or dreaming about falling into the void . Other dreams are rarer, such as dreaming about the police . Having a more common or a rarer dream shouldn't be interpreted as positive or negative . Similarly, a dream that is rarer for one person might be more normal for another. For example, dreaming about the police is much more common if your job involves law enforcement, such as working in a bank or a hospital.
